Vitamin D

Vitamin D has long been known to be important for helping our bodies absorb calcium and maintain strong bones. Your body can make vitamin D from casual sun exposure. If you are always covered up in the sun or using sunscreens, you may be missing out. However, it has been proved that too much exposure to direct sunlight increases the risk of skin cancer. It is a good idea to regularly eat foods that contain vitamin D to make sure you are getting enough. Vitamin D is only found in a few foods. It is found in oil-rich fish, small amounts in eggs and fortified foods such as milk, soy drinks, yogurt, margarine etc.

What is Calcium? Probably everyone has watched a teacher use a stick of chalk(chalk used as a writing tool for over 10,000 years!) to mark a blackboard. Main component of chalk is calcium carbonate. Most people know calcium carbonate is as rocks, limestone and marble. Calcium even contributes to the peals that are used to make rings and necklaces. It is a fairly soft metal with a shiny silver surface when first cut, the surface quickly becomes dull. The average pearl consists of approximately 86 percent calcium carbonate, 12 percent conchiolin, and 2 percent water.
The pH of soil can be raised by adding limestone. Since lawn grasses prefer a soil pH of about 7.5, this will greatly enhance the lawn. They spread ground limestone over the soil.

The bones of people have calcium compounds in. One-fiftieth of the human body is made from calcium. What is the role of calcium for your bodies? Look at the reference below.

  • Strengthening bones and teeth
  • Regulating muscle and heartbeat
  • Controlling blood pressure
  • Transmission of nervous system messages
  • Enzyme function.
  • (Calcium makes up roughly 35% of the body's mineral make-up)
Bones and teeth. Bones are a special form of tissue made by the body cells. Bones are not dead material but living organs. This is why bones will grow together when broken and why they can make new blood for the body.
ExceptionTeeth are a very hard form of calcium carbonate. Specially designed to resist wear. The outer layer of a tooth called the enamel,  the hardest substance in the body. Bone tissue is always renewing itself, shedding old cells and building new ones. However, teeth are not replaceable in the same way as bones inside the body, which is why teeth do not have the self-repairing properties of other bones and thus must be repaired by dentists.

Calcium reduce stress factor. According to a study presented at the 53rd annual Orthopedic Research Society meeting in February of 2007 in San Diego. One group received a daily supplement of 2,000 Mg of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D and the other group received a placebo. At the end of the eight weeks of basic training, 170 women in the placebo group experienced stress fractures; 25 per cent more women than in the calcium and vitamin D supplemented group.

*DRI (dietary reference intake) for calcium is 1000mg for adults aged 19 to 50, and 1200mg from 51 to 70. For vitamin D it is five micrograms per day, rising to 10 after the age of 50.

Vegetarian and calcium connection
Vegetarian diets have been shown to reduce one痴 chances of forming kidney stones and gallstones. In addition, vegetarians may also be at lower risk for osteoporosis because they eat little or no animal protein. A high intake of animal protein encourages the loss of calcium from the bones. Replacing animal products with plant foods reduces the amount of calcium lost. Plant-based rural diets of Asia, which research increasingly shows to be linked to much lower rates of certain cancers, heart disease, obesity and, in some cases, osteoporosis and other chronic, degenerative diseases than those found in the United States even when calcium intake is low.

Can I have too much Vitamin D?
You can consume plenty of calcium from low-fat dairy products like skim milk, yogurt and cottage cheese but without adequate vitamin D, the calcium cannot provide the usual benefit to your bones. You can also take calcium supplements but make sure you don't take more than the amount recommended on the bottle(usually 600-1,500mg per day). Too much calcium may cause gastrointestinal upsets, such as bloating and constipation.
